Amazon Web Services (AWS), an Amazon.com company has launched its second AWS infrastructure Region in Australia—the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region, enabling greater choice for running applications and serving end users from AWS data centres in Australia.

“Australia has a strong history of technical innovation, and the launch of a second AWS Region in Australia provides even greater resilience and enables more customers to develop cloud-based applications that help fuel economic development across the country,” AWS vice president of Infrastructure Services, Prasad Kalyanaraman said.

“The AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region adds to our ongoing infrastructure expansion and investments in Australia since we launched the AWS Asia Pacific (Sydney) Region in 2012. We are proud to deepen our investment by driving local job creation, building cloud skills, and creating opportunities for growth and collaboration with our local customers and AWS Partners.”

The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region will enable local customers with data residency preferences to store data securely while providing customers with lower latency to drive greater productivity, more efficient business operations, and enhanced real-time application performance.

Customers also have access to advanced AWS technologies including compute, storage, networking, business applications, developer tools, data analytics, security, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

AWS customers like fashion jewellery and accessory retail chain Lovisa are able to accelerate their development cycles, be more productive and cost-efficient, and bring solutions and services to the market faster.

Lovisa chief information officer, Robert Lupone said migrating to AWS helped the retail chain improve personalised shopping experiences.

“Since migrating our workloads to AWS in 2022, we have improved our data processing speeds by 65%, allowing quicker access to data that helps us deliver seamless and more personalised shopping experiences. We’re opening new retail stores every week, which means we need to easily scale up new services at a moment’s notice. The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region gives us the additional capacity to accelerate our growing omnichannel capabilities globally and improve the performance of our digital retail platform.”
