Point-of-sale software provider H&L Australia has been hacked by Ukrainian cyber-criminals, reports the ABC.
The company provides systems to over 300 pubs, clubs restaurants and bottle shops across Australia, including those run by the Woolworths-owned Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group.
A server containing marketing material and a client list has been compromised but no financial details were stolen, H&L confirmed to the ABC.
Chief executive Burt Admiraal explained that the company has shut down the affected server and that the hack will have no impact on its register software.
News of the hack first surfaced on UK news outlet The Register, which reported the breach to the Federal Government’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT). The Register reports that the hackers were trying to sell the customer database for $22,000 more than two months ago.
Admiraal told the ABC H&L is working with CERT to ensure any risk is mitigated, and asked clients to get in touch if they receive any spam emails.
