A recent study conducted by Galaxy Research for eBay revealed that Australian households are hoarding 120 million unwanted items worth more than $5 billion.
The research that involved 1,276 Australia found that 85 per cent of Australians are hanging on to at least one superfluous item.
“With $5 billion worth of goods sitting in houses around the nation, now has never been a better time to make some extra cash to boost income, battle future interest rate rises and supplement weekly food and energy bills,” Jenny Thomas, eBay spokesperson, said.
Those living in regional areas and higher income households have the most money to make with an average 17 unwanted valuables per household.
The biggest potential money makers are those that own electronic items. For example, 47 per cent of Australians have mobile phones they no longer uses, 35 per have superfluous movie players or recorders, and 33 per cent have televisions they no longer need.
Similarly, household goods are made up of 42 per cent of unwanted kitchen items, 43 per cent of unwanted home decor, 37 per cent of unwanted appliances and 34 per cent of unused furniture.
