Global commerce leader, Shopify has revealed insights into Australia’s biggest shopping trends from July 2024, with ice cream makers, white noise machines and advent calendars among the highest trending categories.

Christmas in July festivities were in full swing with advent calendar sales seeing a 752.2% month-on-month (MoM) increase in Australia, the second-most popular category in terms of percentage increase. Seasonal and holiday decorations also saw a sizable spike with a 151.1% MoM increase.

Shopify data found that fruity-flavoured alcoholic beverages are the new drink of choice with sales in that category increasing by 139.1%, compared to beer which saw a slight rise (4.1%) and spirits such as vodka (-4.9%), tequila (-19.5%) and rum (-1.7%), which decreased in popularity. Looking at overall sales, however, whiskey continues to be Australia’s most popular beverage, ranking fourth in terms of GMV by category.

‘Girl dinner’, a meal composed of no-cook snacks, such as charcuterie boards, took socials by storm this time last year. However, according to Shopify’s July trends, ‘girl dinner’ is starting to fizzle out of style with cheese sales decreasing by 18.5%, meat decreasing by 10.7%, nuts and seeds decreasing by 19.3% and cutting boards decreasing by 20.4%

With almost half of Australians not getting enough rest, according to the Sleep Health Foundation, a pursuit for a good night’s sleep is reflected in recent shopping trends with white noise machinesseeing a 237.5% MoM increase in sales, suggesting a growing reliance on these devices to improve sleep quality.

In July, beauty-related categories led the sales in terms of GMV, with products such aslotions, moisturisers, and makeup items topping the charts nationally. Notably, hair straighteners experienced a 121.4% month-over-month increase, while skin care rollers rose by 31.5%. Additionally, highlighters and luminisers saw a 30.2% boost, and sales ofteeth whitenersgrew by 14.8% MoM.

Shopify also recorded a sizable rise in cricket-related sales in June and the latest data shows this trend is far from over with cricket bats (87.9%), cricket balls (74.2%), cricket protective gear (84.9%) and cricket gloves (65.3%) all increasing in popularity over the past month.
