Retail is among the top five most targeted industries for hands-on, human-led cyber attacks in the Asia Pacific region, according to a new report from leader in cloud protection of endpoints, cloud workloads, identity and data, CrowdStrike.

In the Nowhere to Hide: 2022 Falcon Overwatch Threat Hunting report, retail ranked fourth, behind telecommunications, technology and manufacturing industries, but ahead of the academic industry. Hands-on interactive intrusions increased 60% year-on-year in the Asia Pacific region – far higher than the global average of 50%. Globally, retail is the fourth most targeted by financially motivated (ecrime) actors.

Breakout times for ecrime adversaries accelerated, averaging one hour and 24 minutes, a reduction of 14 minutes compared to just six months ago, with 30% of intrusions achieved in less than 30 minutes. These findings underline the speed and scale at which threat actors evolve their tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), and are capable of bypassing even the most sophisticated technology-based defense systems.

“Over the past 12 months, the world has faced new challenges spurred by economic pressures and geopolitical tensions, backdropping a threat landscape that is as complicated as ever,” CrowdStrike vice president of Falcon OverWatch, Param Singh said.

“To thwart brazen threat actors, security teams must implement solutions that proactively search for hidden and advanced attacks every hour of every day. The combination of the CrowdStrike Falcon platform with the telemetry, tooling, threat intelligence and human ingenuity of Falcon OverWatch managed threat hunting protects organizations globally against the most sophisticated and stealthy threats.”
