eBay teams up with Messina to celebrate 21 years

To celebrate turning 21, eBay Australia has joined forces with Messina to create a limited-edition gelato cake, eBay’s 21st Birthday Mushroom, with all proceeds going to charity.

Messina has reimagined its iconic Dr Evil’s Magic Mushroom including altering the flavours and size for the first time. The cake features a never-before-tasted flavour combination and comes in a new limited-edition midi size.

A limited number of these cakes have been created and will be available exclusively on ebay.com.au to customers in metro Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane from Tuesday 15 September. Priced at $21 including delivery, every dollar from each sale will go to the Beyond Blue Support Service.

The twist on the all-time classic boasts a red chocolate mushroom dome adorned with white chocolate buttons in the famous eBay colours. Inside is a combination of vanilla gelato packed with birthday cake, chocolate coated honeycomb and raspberry jam. Perched on a stem made of Messina’s home-made dulce de leche and vanilla gelato, on a popping candy feuilletine grass base.

Each one of the midi gelato cakes has been handmade by Messina’s in-house team of chefs at Messina HQ in Sydney. The handcrafted gelato cake took over 100 hours of development.

eBay Australia’s Sophie Onikul said, “For our 21st birthday we wanted to demonstrate how far eBay Australia has come. From an online auction house, to Australia’s number one shopping site with 40,000 Australian retailers including Coles, The Good Guys and Cotton On – and now the nation’s favourite gelato, Messina.

Declan Lee at Messina said, “We wanted to do something unique to celebrate eBay’s 21st birthday and thought a special edition of our best-selling cake would be the perfect way to do it.  To date we have sold over 25,000 gelato mushrooms but this is the first time we have re-invented it with new flavours.”
