Vicinity Centres is celebrating Lunar New Year with a variety of activities across its Melbourne shopping centres including Box Hill Central, Northland, Sunshine Marketplace, The Glen and Victoria Gardens.

From Monday 5 February to Sunday 18 February, each centre is presenting cultural performances, dragon installations and an opportunity for visitors to win a share in over $5,000 worth of Vicinity Centres gift cards. Shoppers simply spend $20 in-centre and sign up to their Vicinity Centres database to enter the draw.

Exclusive to Box Hill Central and The Glen, visitors are invited to explore a curated series of art installations, created by local artists and commissioned by Vicinity Centres to provide insight into the cultural roots of Lunar New Year celebrations.

A unique dragon discovery journey is kicked off by renowned Naarm/Melbourne-based artist, Rel Pham, who has created two six-metre inflatable dragons installed at both centres as part of Tenacious Root, a custom artwork inspired by old-world fables and rituals. Also on display at both centres is a series of artworks designed to encourage reflection on the symbolism and significance of the Chinese Zodiac sign.

Each individual artwork offers the artist’s unique perspective and personal connection to the Year of the Dragon and explores the elements of wood, earth, water, fire, and metal, symbolising the interconnectedness of nature and Lunar New Year celebrations.

From Saturday 10 February, the festivities continue at Box Hill Central, Northland, Sunshine Marketplace, The Glen and Victoria Gardens with dragon and lion dance performances. These occur on selected dates during the Lunar New Year celebrations.

“Our Lunar New Year activation demonstrates our commitment to creating memorable experiences for our customers. We are proud to collaborate with the wonderful local artists and community partners to bring this vibrant celebration to life,” Vicinity Centres regional general manager of shopping centres, John Nadalin said.
