Group buying site Scoopon is extending its offer with the launch of Scoopon Travel, a dedicated site that offers national deals on local and international flights, accommodation and travel packages.

The site will also be offering event-based ticketing and accommodation packages to major events such as the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the Australian Open Tennis and the Australian Formula One GP.

Scoopon general manager Jon Beros said the travel and hospitality sector is one of many new market categories the company will explore to broaden its audience.

 “Like any business, group buying needs to continually innovate to remain fresh and relevant. We are constantly looking for new and better ways to do things and new markets we can explore. It’s an exciting time and we have more surprises up our sleeve,” he said.

The launch of Scoopon Travel follows the company’s recent partnership with Strategic Airlines to offer airfares to Phuket which resulted in 2000 air flights being sold in 24 hours.

Also, the company noted that the new site will offer the local tourism sector a “winning” marketing tool to boost accommodation rates and attract new clientele.

Tim Oberg from Active Stays, Mermaid Beach recently ran a promotion with Scoopon and said: “Scoopon provided us with an opportunity to market our business throughout a stagnant tourism period which increased our occupancy rates. We were also able to report on an increase in bookings from those who spoke about our offer which attracted repeat business.”
