Ikea is preparing to open its biggest store in the southern hemisphere on Thursday 3 November at Sydney’s Tempe.
Ikea Tempe will measure at 39,000 square metres and has promised that the store will be 50 per cent bigger with twice as many cash registers at its currently only Sydney-existing store at Rhodes.
“It will be double the size of the Sydney Cricket Ground, and will offer almost 9,000 products, a 760-seat restaurant and 1,680 dedicated IKEA car spaces,” Ikea said in a statement.
“Walking a full lap of the store will register 2.5km on the pedometer – which is the equivalent of walking the full length of Sydney Harbour Bridge – twice. And with over 60 room settings and three fully complete room sets, shoppers are set to be amazed.”
The anticipation for the store opening grows as it was scheduled to open in late October 2011 but road work to reduce traffic congestion in the area was required.
It also comes after the Swedish retailer opened its Springvale store last week, which was a joint development with Harvey Norman to create the largest homemaker centre in the country.
According to Ikea, it expects that a total of seven stores will be opened across Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney by 2015.
