David Jones has announced it will open its first stand-alone gourmet food store in Melbourne next year.

The 500-square-metre David Jones Food store will be housed in the luxury Capitol Grand South Yarra retail precinct on Chapel Street and promises to be a “world-class food concept”.

Catering to the area’s affluent and time poor residents, the store will offer premium produce including meat and seafood, and pre-prepared vegetables, salads and fruit. There will also be ready-made meals on offer, which the department store said will be restaurant quality.

“We know that when it comes to food our customers want us to provide provenance, freshness and convenience but also that our offering needs to be accessible to their busy lives,” said David Jones CEO David Thomas.

“We are excited to bring our new world-class food concept to their doorstep in the heart of South Yarra as a part of this exciting new development. Melbourne’s Capitol Grand will be the perfect home for David Jones Food with a natural brand alignment and a shared vision to provide a world-class experience to our customers.”

The majority of product will be under the department store’s own premium David Jones Food label, which launched earlier this year. This includes 90 per cent of the store’s fresh offering along with grocery products ranging from ice cream and confectionery to stir-fry sauces and herbs and spices. These will be complemented by a curated range of brands, many of which are exclusive to David Jones.

The new store is part of David Jones’ focus on delivering a premium food offering, which began with the opening of a flagship Food Hall at its Bondi Junction store in Sydney and the launch of its own premium food brand, David Jones Food, in August 2017.

David Jones said the Chapel Street store would be the first of several standalone food stores it will open nationally.
