In conjunction with Planet Ark, ALDI has launched their everyday olive oil range featuring a Carbon Reduction Label.

It is the first company to join the Plant Ark Carbon Reduction Label program in Australia. Its olive oils are also the first in the world to be certified by the Carbon Trust.

Stefan Kopp, ALDI managing director – buying, told Retailbiz it encourages others to follow in its footsteps as it joins an international list of major businesses committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of products.

“At ALDI we take our responsibility to the communities in which we operate very seriously and acting in a sustainable manner is integrated into every aspect of our business operations,” he said.

“The introduction of the Carbon Reduction Label provides our customers with the opportunity to make better informed purchasing decisions.

“Independent research conducted for Planet Ark found 60 per cent of Australians would be more likely to purchase a product displaying the Carbon Reduction Label so it’s certainly something we believe consumers will value. “

According to Kopp, ALDI’s olive oil range has undergone an assessment to determine the total carbon footprint, including the lifecycle stages from raw materials and manufacturing, right through to disposal or recycling of packaging.

The Carbon Reduction Label, which comprises of a footprint logo, will be displayed on a per 100ml basis for easy comparison.

ALDI has committed to reducing the carbon footprint of its everyday olive oil range within two years of the label appearing.
