Australia’s original and number one leak-proof underwear brand, Modibodi has developed the world’s first biodegradable period and pee proof underwear.
Modibodi’s Biodegradable Brief is the first biodegradable period and pee proof underwear, scientifically proven to have 97% of its components break down into nontoxic substances at the end of their usable life with most of the brief’s materials decomposing within six months when buried in active soil.
“After years of blood, sweat and science, we couldn’t be prouder to pioneer the world’s first biodegradable period and pee proof brief. This is a product that not only reduces waste but doesn’t impact our planet when it reaches its end-of-life use,” Modibodi founder and CEO, Kristy Chong said.
Modibodi’s new Biodegradable Brief was developed over two years and created using a combination of natural and bioengineered synthetic textiles.
“The key barrier to biodegradability for most brands is the elastane used in the fabric to provide stretch and comfort alongside that used in waist and leg elastics. Modibodi has solved this issue by using a crimp fibre and super fine rib knit construction in the main outer fabric to maintain its shape and stretch without the need for elastane,” Chong explained.
Modibodi’s Biodegradable Brief was tested at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT).
According to RMIT Centre for Materials Innovation and Future Fashion: “After nine weeks of a soil burial test, the natural fibres have shown a clear sign of degradation with holes created on the outer part of the garment from microorganisms present in the soil. The TPU waterproof film has shown some loss of weight and strength within nine weeks. A longer period of burial would indicate the continued trajectory.”
Modibodi’s Biodegradable Brief are Standard100 by Oeko-Tex certified free from harmful chemicals.
The Modibodi Biodegradable Brief has also been tested to perform even after 100 washes and offers the same superior absorbency and quality as the regular Modibodi range. Available in a full brief and bikini style, the Biodegradable Brief comes in sizes 8 to 20, priced from $42.50.
