Marielle Collins, designer of the Skarong, has long aimed to capture the essence and emotion of the Australian beach lifestyle through designs that are both distinctive and user-friendly while reimagining the classic sarong.
But innovation comes with challenges. In an interview, Collins shared one in particular: the difficulty of creating a more user-friendly version.
“One significant challenge was reimagining the classic sarong into a garment that’s elegant yet effortless to wear,” Collins told RetailBiz.
The story behind Skarong’s stylish, sustainable evolution
“The goal was to achieve a design that not only offered a flawless, figure‐flattering fit across a range of body shapes but also allowed the garment to seamlessly transform into a top, skirt, or dress,”
Collins spent a year refining the pattern through multiple prototypes, working to strike a balance between aesthetics and ease of use. Therefore, form, function, and versatility had to be carefully combined.
The result is a step-by-step design process that overcomes the traditional limitations of sarongs, integrating form, function, and versatility into a user-friendly, visually appealing product.
Blending beachwear with bold, eco-conscious design
Sustainability is also central to Skarong’s identity. Collins emphasised that environmental responsibility influences every stage of design and production.
“Environmental responsibility lies at the core of Skarong’s ethos. From the drawing board to the final stitch, design choices are carefully weighed against their environmental impact. For instance, by developing eco-friendly fabric options and prioritising local production processes, Skarong ensures that each product not only reflects a distinct Australian lifestyle but also supports sustainable practices,” Collins said.
The brand’s commitment to reducing waste and emissions is evident in its use of ethically sourced and sustainably produced materials. A standout example is the Eco Mesh Skarong—one of its bestsellers—made with REPREVE yarn spun from 92% recycled plastic bottles.
“By incorporating recycled plastic bottles into fabrics like the Eco Mesh, the brand not only reduces reliance on virgin materials but also lessens its carbon footprint. This choice has influenced the final product by adding a unique texture and lightweight quality that enhances comfort and versatility,” Collins explains.
“The recycled fabrics lend a modern, sustainable edge to the garment that resonates with eco-conscious consumers, ultimately shaping a product that harmoniously marries style with sustainability.”
Beyond design and sustainability, ethical production remains a key pillar. Skarong integrates artisanal craftsmanship with cruelty-free, transparent supply chain practices, aligning with growing consumer demand for authenticity and social responsibility in fashion.
“Each garment is meticulously crafted to ensure a superb fit and elegant look, yet production practices remain firmly rooted in ethical values. This includes using cruelty-free methods, sourcing sustainably, and maintaining transparent supply-chain relationships,” Collins added.
Rooted in empathy, shaped by feedback: a brand that listens and gives back
This holistic approach to fashion also extends into community outreach. Skarong produces and donates turbans to cancer patients, an initiative Collins described as “a way to restore dignity and confidence during challenging times.”
“Initially launched as a small gesture inspired by personal empathy and community spirit, the program has grown considerably.”
Customer feedback has played an important role in Skarong’s evolution. Collins noted that the garment’s versatility, its ability to transition from beachwear to evening attire, and flattering fit are consistently praised.
“Heartwarming testimonials abound; from stories of boosted confidence to remarks on how the design perfectly flatters every body shape, these reflections validate the brand’s dedication to both style and functionality,” Collins said.
Remaining aligned with its origins while adapting to new trends has allowed Skarong to innovate without losing its identity.
“While trends and consumer needs evolve, the fundamental values of versatility, ethical production, and high-quality craftsmanship remain unchanged. By continuously experimenting with sustainable materials and updating design techniques, the brand manages to evolve gracefully without losing its unmistakable signature,” Collins said.
New sizes and styles on the horizon, designed for every body
Skarong’s next phase aims to be as bold as their beginnings, bringing fresh ideas to a classic piece. Among the brand’s future plans are potential new product lines with boleros and menswear and limited-edition collections, and expand its size range with the launch of an XL option.
“Expect to see limited-edition releases that experiment with new textures and colors, alongside ongoing collaborations that bring fresh perspectives to the collection,” Collins said.
“My mission is to make everyone feel inclusive of feeling their best at the beach or on vacation.”
