Square has launched Square Handheld in Australia.

Square has introduced Square Handheld in Australia, a mobile device designed to support fast-paced businesses such as cafés, restaurants, and retail stores.

The device combines Square’s point-of-sale software with compact hardware that allows sellers to manage payments and operations on the go.

Weighing just over 300 grams, the device features a 6.2-inch Gorilla Glass touchscreen and is IP54-rated to resist dust and splashes.

It includes built-in barcode scanning, a 16MP camera, and supports real-time inventory updates and mobile sales, all integrated with Square’s software ecosystem.

Square Handheld runs on the latest Square Point of Sale platform and supports multiple industry modes—Full Service, Quick Service, Bar, and Retail—allowing businesses to customise workflows. Users can adjust settings and receive push notifications to match their operational needs.

Restaurants and retailers, which account for a significant share of Square’s global payments volume, are expected to benefit most. In hospitality settings, the device enables staff to manage tables, enter orders, and take payments without leaving the floor.

Canberra restaurant Lunetta was among the first adopters.

“Square has been integral to how we run our business from the very beginning, and Square Handheld has elevated that even further,” said manager Matt Keeley.

“It blends beautifully into our space, both visually and operationally. The design is so clean and discreet, it doesn’t interrupt the atmosphere we’ve worked hard to create.”

Alongside the hardware, Square has launched an updated Point of Sale app that merges features from Square for Restaurants, Square for Retail, and Square Appointments into one platform. The new app introduces custom layouts, inventory tools, and online ordering for restaurants, designed to reduce reliance on third-party delivery platforms.

“Square Handheld was designed to help sellers deliver great service anywhere their customers are – whether that’s taking orders at the table, completing a sale on the shop floor, or checking stock on the go,” said Colin Birney, Head of Business Development at Square.

“With Square Handheld, we’re helping businesses across Australia be more productive, and thrive in an increasingly dynamic market.”

Square Handheld is available online via the Square Shop for $349. Optional Belkin protective cases are priced at $59.

The launch is part of Square’s biannual Square Releases cycle. Additional updates coming later in 2025 include restaurant combo features, custom booking forms, and advanced invoicing tools.

Square said many of the changes were developed in response to feedback from Australian sellers.
