The strong Australian dollar, price deflation and the eroding consumer confidence has been to blame for Harvey Norman’s 19.3 per cent fall in its first quarter profit before tax.

The company reported that total sales fell to $1.48 billion for the three months ended 30 September, while pre-tax earnings dropped from $77.7 million to $62.8 million.

When compared to global sales for the period, the company, which also has stores in New Zealand, Slovenia, Ireland and Northern Ireland, the decreased was 3.8 per cent.

“Global sales have been negatively affected by the deterioration of the New Zealand dollar by 0.3 per cent, Euro by 5.7 per cent and UK Pound by 10.6 per cent against the Australian dollar, from 1 July 2011 to 30 September 2011,” the company said in a statement.

According to the company, the closure of four Clive Peeters and three Rick Hart stores also had a negative impact on its performance.

Despite this, the company has opened new stores in Croatia, Slovenia, Singapore, as well as its homemaker complex in Victoria anchored by Ikea, Harvey Norman and Domayne.

I've stopped buying anything at Harvey Norman because the man whines all the time. I'm sick of him. Not as important, but his selection of items is not the best and he is not the cheapest. But what is important is that he has the worst web presence of all the majors and a horrible online store. I went there a few days ago because I genuinely wanted to buy an Apple computer from Harvey Norman as he's the closest to me, but he doesn't sell them. It's about time he gets with the times.

I use Harvey Norman Stores to get the best price i can for the product i want then go to a competitor and buy it off them. I am sick of him as well plus he was against the Governments Stimulus Package but his hand didn't shake when a lot of it was spent on big screen tv's by housos. He has more money than a bull can, you know what , he doesn't need mine.

Gerry Harvey is always in our faces about supporting Australians, but he keeps invading small towns and forcing small long term LOCAL retailers out of business. He should stay in the larger major centres and leave country and rural Australia alone...it is pure greed on his part. He gets young people in to run his franchises and they are rude, offensive and predatory to other local businesses. Most of these managers dont make any money as they pay Gerry his cut before they even sell anything. Gerry Harvey does not give a damn about any australian but himself. Shame on you Gerry Harvey. Support your LOCAL furniture and electrical retailer who have always been there for you and who employ your kids, buy local property, use and support local clubs and causes and care about you and their community!
